Summer Term

Date: 15th Apr 2016 @ 6:51pm

Hello! Welcome back for our final school term of the year. I can't believe we are entering into our final term! This term we will be consolidating lots of our learning as well as getting ready for the next part of our school journey and we will be learning lots of new and exciting things as well. Later on in the term we will be welcoming our new starters on their visits.

This term our theme is superheroes! We will be learning all about our super learning powers and how to identify when we have been a super learner. We will begin by looking at everyday superheroes such as doctors, nurses, paramedics, police officers and firefighters. If you, or any one you know, works in one of these fields and would be happy to talk to the children about the profession then please get in touch. We will then move on to looking at sporting superheroes. We will be focussing on the Olympic Games in Rio De Jeneiro. As well as learning about Rio De Janeiro we will be finding out what it is like to be a professional sports person in preparation for our own sports day.

In Year 1 we will be designing our own superheroes and using expanded noun phrases to describe them. We will be writing superhero poems, comic strips and stories. If anyone has any old comic books at home that we could have then please drop them in. We will be ensuring that we understand what plurals are and how to use the ending -es in words such as 'superheroes'. We will also practice using question marks and exclamation marks. In maths we will continue to work on fractions finding a half and a quarter of amounts. We will then move on to looking at division. We will continue to look at numbers to 100 ad we will use these to solve addition and subtraction problems. We will also be learning about money, capacity and position and direction including whole, half and quarter turns. In science we will be learning all about plants.

In Reception we will be supporting all the children to be writing and reading sentences as independently as possible through daily adult-led sessions. We will continue our daily super sentence writing and our phonics sessions. This half term we will be learning all of the phase 3 sounds. To view the sounds and the high frequency and tricky words click on the link. http://www.letters-and-sounds.com/phase-3.html

In maths we will be ensuring all children are confident at reading and writing numbers to 20. We will use these numbers to solve simple addition and subtraction problems. We will create patterns involving size, shape and colour. We will be learning to order and sequence familiar events as well as using positional language such as behind, on top and in front. We will also be finding 1 more or 1 less than a number.

This term we are having a gardening club for all Reception and Year 1 children. Look out for a letter during the first week back.

I am really looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday. Get plenty of rest this weekend ready for the start of the new term. Don't forget to check for updates on our school Twitter feed @whitleyschool.
